We are doing OurPart™ to ensure there is enough seafood available to meet the needs of families today and in the future.
As part of our commitment to sourcing sustainable seafood, we’ve partnered with Ocean Wise Seafood Program. Ocean Wise Seafood Program is part of Ocean Wise, a global ocean conservation organization based in Vancouver, British Columbia. We pick products recommended by Ocean Wise Seafood and highlight them amongst the fish and seafood offerings in our stores.
How can you know whether you’re making ocean-friendly choices? Simple. Just look for that Ocean Wise logo next to fish and seafood items or on packaging at your local Sobeys store. It is an assurance that you are purchasing seafood from a certified fishery.
Our seafood choices today matter to the health of our oceans for generations to come!
Proud to Offer Sustainable Choices
We offer a wide range of products recommended by the Ocean Wise Seafood Program. Good examples are farmed scallops, mussels, clams, and oysters.
These mollusks require no special feed, have a very low impact on the environment, and can help improve the water quality of their surroundings.
Did you know? Oysters can filter up to 15 litres of water every hour!
Selling sustainably farmed shellfish is a sign of our continued commitment to providing seafood that can be enjoyed by us and the generations to come.
Eliminating Unsustainable Species
At Sobeys, we no longer sell several unsustainable species that play essential roles in ocean ecosystems and are now threatened. The list includes bluefin tuna, all species of shark, Chilean sea bass, and orange roughy.

Keeping Our Oceans Healthy
Protecting our oceans is not only critical for maintaining the health of our planet but also impacts the availability of seafood for future generations.
We actively manage our complete seafood assortment. This way, we ensure we're not selling a species with sustainability concerns.
For example, not sourcing Endangered or Critically Endangered species. These identifications come from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Another example relates to our suppliers. We don't use suppliers who harvest using illegal, unreported, or unregulated methods.
Through a joint effort with Ocean Wise Seafood Program, we continually educate our staff and customers. This way, we're all on the same page when it comes to environmental issues.
So, if you'd like to find out more about our efforts here at Sobeys, check out our page, "Casting for Sustainable Fish with Ocean Wise”. We go into a bit more depth about sea-level sustainability and how restorative aquaculture makes our oceans a brighter blue.
